This week I’m joined by Courtney Townley, a health and self-leadership coach and author of The Consistency Code. We get into integrity pain, that nagging discomfort when your daily choices don’t match what you actually want for your life, why willpower isn’t the fix, and the four practices behind her Consistency Code: awareness, organization, follow through, and realignment.
If you’ve ever set a goal, fallen off, and then beaten yourself up about it, this one’s for you. Falling out of alignment is a given. How fast you get back is what actually matters.
Most of us don’t have a discipline problem. We have an alignment problem.
That nagging discomfort has a name
Courtney calls it integrity pain. It’s the low-grade ache you feel when your daily choices don’t line up with what you actually want for your life.
You know the feeling. You said you’d go to bed early, and it’s midnight again. You said you’d stop checking email at dinner, and there you are.
Integrity pain is a signal. And once you can name it, you can actually do something with it.
Health is bigger than your body
One line from Courtney’s book stopped me cold:
It wasn’t so much the weight of the body that affected someone’s health as it was the weight of their life.
So much of how we feel comes from our relationships, our work, our environment, and whether our days have any meaning in them. The number on the scale is the smallest part of the story.
Willpower isn’t the fix
A lot of high performers think they just need more discipline. Courtney makes the case that leaning harder on willpower is the actual problem.
Willpower is a finite tank, and most of us drain it on everyone else before we get to ourselves. The answer is building a life that doesn’t require heroic effort to stay consistent.
The four practices behind the Consistency Code
This is the part I keep coming back to. Courtney’s framework has four practices that work as a continuous loop:
- Awareness. Get honest about what’s actually happening before you try to fix anything.
- Organization. Set your life up so the right choice is the easy choice.
- Follow-through. Make commitments so small you can’t talk yourself out of them.
- Realignment. Get back on track fast when you fall off, without the shame spiral.
Most people nail the first three and skip the fourth. But realignment is the whole game.
You will fall out of alignment. That’s a given. How fast you come back is the skill worth building.
Failing well
Courtney has a whole chapter on failing well, and it’s the opposite of the usual motivational noise. The goal isn’t to never fall off. The goal is to treat every slip as data instead of a verdict on who you are.
That reframe alone takes the pressure off.
