Stop Wasting Energy on What Doesn’t Matter

Ever find yourself exhausted before noon, wondering where all your energy went? You’re not lazy, unmotivated, or any other label your inner critic might throw at you. The truth is, you’re likely wasting energy on things that don’t actually matter.

We’ve all done it… saying yes to projects that don’t align with our goals, holding onto habits that no longer serve us, or staying in draining relationships because the idea of change is just too overwhelming. But every time you pour your energy into something that don’t really matter to you, you’re robbing yourself of the chance to invest that energy where it can create real impact.

Energy Drain Without Purpose

There are only so many hours in a day, and every single one of them is precious. Yet, too often, we find ourselves saying “yes” to things out of guilt, obligation, or just plain habit. We stay in meetings that drag on with no clear purpose, take on tasks that don’t move the needle, and cling to commitments that drain more than they give.

And why? Because somewhere along the line, we’ve been sold the idea that doing more equates to being more.

And shocker, I know, but it doesn’t.

Think about the last time you stayed late at work for something that didn’t actually matter. Or signed up for yet another committee because you felt you “should.” Or kept pushing through a project you hated because you’d already put in too much effort to quit. That’s the sunk cost fallacy right there. And it’s killing your vibe, my friend.

Every time you hold on to something that’s not serving you, you’re pouring precious energy into a black hole. Imagine trying to fill a bucket that has a hole in it… no matter how much water you add, it just keeps leaking out.

That’s what’s happening with your time and energy when you cling to things that don’t actually serve your growth or happiness. The result? Burnout, frustration, and the feeling that you’re stuck in a life that isn’t fully yours.

Why We Hang On (Even When It Hurts)

Why do we do this to ourselves? Because letting go is terrifying. We worry that if we drop that ball, we’ll be seen as weak, or worse, we might miss out on some vague opportunity.

Or maybe you think you’re a failure if you quit. But staying stuck is the real failure. It’s the fear of the unknown that keeps you in a situation that’s killing your joy.

How to Stop the Drain

Identify Your Energy Leeches: Write down everything eating up your time and energy. Is that weekly status meeting necessary, or just a black hole? Be brutally honest.

Use the 3-Question Filter: For each item on your list, ask:

  • Does this align with my values?
  • Does this bring me joy or fulfillment?
  • Would my life be better without this?

If you’re hitting “no,” “no,” “better,” you know what to do.

The Truth About Sunk Costs

Start Small, Build Big: Don’t go quitting your job today (unless you’re ready for that!). Start with something easy, like unsubscribing from emails that drive you nuts. Then work up to the bigger stuff, like that project that’s been a thorn in your side for years.

Check Your Gut, Not Your Ego: Your ego might want to keep you tied to things that validate it. Your gut? It knows better. Trust it.

Create Space for What Matters: Once you’ve cleared the dead weight, you’ll have room for the stuff that really lights you up. That’s where the magic happens.

Let It Go

Let it go, let it go
Can’t hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door

Think of your energy like a bank account. Every commitment you make, every task you take on, is like a withdrawal. Are you spending wisely, or are you overdrafting on things that don’t pay off? You deserve to invest in what brings you joy, growth, and fulfillment, not what leaves you feeling depleted.

You deserve a life filled with things that energize, not drain you. Start by identifying just one thing that no longer serves you and let it go today. You’ll be amazed at how quickly the space for something better opens up.
